Abstract
\nIn this talk I begin with an overview of the effect of process design on process operability, with a focus on challenges due to nonlinear behavior. A classic chemical reactor example is used to illustrate that direct process scale-up can lead to a process design where certain regions of desired operation are infeasible. Model predictive control (MPC) has become the standard advanced control technique applied in the chemical process industries, and we present different MPC approaches for handling nonlinear systems and rejecting unmeasured disturbances. Finally, recent progress towards Industry 4.0 (Smart Manufacturing in the US) will be discussed.
Participation is open to all interested people.
