The Hempel Foundation Coatings Science and Technology Centre (CoaST), DTU Chemical Engineering is presently seeking a skilled and experienced electron microscopy specialist who will help the CoaST scientists and engineers with their research efforts and activities in CoaST.

CoaST covers coatings technologies from raw materials, over formulation, test and characterization to production and application. In the broad perspective, CoaST will support development, production and application of coatings with improved sustainability profiles over the lifetime of the coating. Areas of research include e.g. anticorrosive coatings for steel structures, blade coatings for wind turbines, intumescent coatings for passive fire protection, antifouling coatings for ships, coatings for the cement- and mineral industries, for oil and gas pipelines at high temperature and high pressure etc.

The mission of CoaST is to establish a strong research, innovation and education environment, and develop new and improved methods and technologies for the formulation, testing, characterization, production and application of coatings.

The job
The candidate is expected to support the research efforts in CoaST and will work closely together with a diverse group of students, scientists, researchers, experts, technicians, and other personnel inside and outside DTU Chemical Engineering. Amongst others the main tasks will be:

  • Designing novel microscopy based research methodologies in the field of coatings technology
  • Teaching and training students and researchers to prepare specimens
  • Training the students and researchers to operate electron microscopy equipment safely and effectively
  • Produce high-quality micrographs/spectra, and analyze data
  • Maintaining electron microscopy instruments, accessories and computers
  • Keep accurate and complete records of different samples (nature, composition etc.) and microscopy activities
  • Handling other CoaST experimental facilities, instruments and projects as needed

Our expectations of you
A successful candidate must be able to work in a technically diverse environment and to adapt to changing requirements. We expect you to have:

  • Hands-on expertise with and solid understanding of operating a series of microscopes – more precisely Scanning Electron Microscopes (SEM) and Scanning Acoustic Microscopes (SAM), advanced light microscopes (Digital microscope and Profilometer), and Energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) characterization tool
  • Expert user with SEM and SAM specimen preparations and sputtering parameters.
  • Ability to clearly and effectively instruct users and colleagues
  • Ability to produce scientific outcomes
  • Ability to troubleshoot problems on complex systems in real-time
  • Ability to work as part of a team, interacting with users from a diverse population and wide-range of experience levels
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills including mastery of written and spoken English for technical discussions and user training
  • Ability to work supervised and unsupervised
  • The ability to learn specific practical techniques and apply this knowledge to solve technical problems
  • A high level of enthusiasm and commitment

We also expect you to be able to start as soon as possible.

PREFERRED: advanced degree in a field that relies heavily on electron imaging (materials science, chemistry, applied physics, etc.), a minimum of 3+ years of work experience in a user- or service-based environment, working knowledge of scientific programming and image analysis, and some experience in polymers and coatings will be an advantage.

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations or other relevant agreement. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union.
