DRIP

(Danish Partnership for Resource and Water Efficient Industrial Food Production)

Objective

DRIP aims to reduce water consumption in leading Danish food productions by developing new sustainable water and production technology solutions and concepts. The ambition is to use significantly less water of drinking water quality and increasingly use recycled water without compromising product quality and food safety. The developed technologies and solutions will be tested in pilot or full-scale under production conditions. The goal is to reduce water consumption by 15 – 30 percent.

Background

The world's total water consumption, according to UN calculations, will increase by 30 percent by 2030. This, in combination with the highly increased urbanization, sets the world's water resources under severe pressure, which creates a large demand for new technological solutions. Denmark has a strong ambition and potential to take such a role to contribute to the solutions.

Food safety requires a large amount of water. New technology can help us conserve the clean water in food production. Once the technologies are developed, the ambition is to create new export successes of Danish knowledge and technology in the water sector. At the same time, the food industry's competitiveness will be improved as well.

The Project

DRIP was launched on March 1, 2015 with three collaborating universities (Technical University of Denmark, University of Copenhagen and Copenhagen Business School), two GTS institutes (Danish Technological Institute, DHI) and 14 companies (Danish Crown, Alfa Laval, Aquaporin, Arla, Grundfos, Triple Nine, Siemens, HKScan, Cabinplant, DSS, Carlsberg, Danish Agriculture & Food Council, Ultraaqua, LiqTech).

The project is divided into eight work packages (WP) with different responsibilities:

WP1 - Regulation of food safety and environment

WP2 - Mapping and system analyses

WP3 - Water efficient production lines including closed loop solutions

WP4 - Cleaning technology and concepts – including CIP (Clean-in-place)

WP5 - Wastewater treatment and reuse in utility functions or industrial symbiosis

WP6 - Monitoring and control systems (sensors, HACCP and quality assurance)

WP7 - Best practices and lighthouse projects

WP8 - Business models and commercialization

The partnership is in close dialogue with the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration, the Danish Environmental Protection Agency, and the Danish Nature Agency to ensure that important considerations regarding regulation are taken into account.
