The host unit of this position is the PROSYS Research Centre at DTU Chemical Engineering. The process system engineering group at the center is well-known for the development of process and plant-wide models, advanced control technologies and benchmarking, optimal process design and tools for parameter estimation and global sensitivity/uncertainty analysis for surrogate model development. In addition to intellectual and infrastructural support from the centre, the project will benefit from the longstanding, close research collaboration between the centre and water utilities (e.g., BIOFOS) as well as other research institutions (e.g., USC-Spain, KTH, and Lund University) through several projects e.g. Water JPI Pioneer STP.

This postdoctoral researcher position is offered as part of a recently funded Water JPI project Pioneer STP to contribute to research and development of process synthesis and optimization of WWTP plants among others.

Responsibilities and tasks
This is an exciting position with the main responsibility to test and implement advanced optimization algorithms (MINO – mixed integer nonlinear optimization) as well as stochastic optimization algorithms for the novel challenge of synthesizing innovative wastewater treatment plant designs for future. The postdoc will work together with a strong team of 2 PhD students and 1 Marie Curie postdoc fellow to contribute to development of advanced design tool for WWTPs: 

  • The adaptation and tuning of the state of the art MINO and stochastic optimization algorithms for the solution of nonlinear optimization problem formulated for the superstructure based WWTP designs
  • The superstructure (data and models) are defined in Matlab Simulink, while optimization algorithm(s) are accessible in a third party software such as GAMS, python or any other open source packages.
  • Wastewater design problem is based on industrially realistic and relevant boundaries hence for retrofitting of existing full-scale plants.
  • Multi-criteria objective function including economics, resource recovery and primary effluent quality constraints among others are defined and solved for different case studies in partnership with Pioneer project network.

The postdoc researcher maybe asked to co-supervise MSc/PhD doing research in optimization field.

Qualifications
Candidates should have a PhD degree or equivalent.

Further qualifications: 

  • You are a driven and motivated researchers from either discipline of operations research, applied mathematics or chemical engineering and and passionate about deploying mathematical optimization algorithm for the socially and environmentally important challenge of water treatment in circular economy.
  • You have hands on experience with developing, testing or applying optimization algorithms (MINO or stochastic optimization algorithms, sampling (Monte Carlo) based algorithms, among others)
  • You are good at communication and team player. When needed you can work independently, self-driven and have can do attitude for solving trivial challenges arising for optimization algorithm implementation.

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union. The period of employment is 1 years.
