A collaboration project by DTU and Babcock Wilcox Vølund is started to further develop and optimize an improved superheater concept, which can lead to increased power efficiency of waste to energy plants. By placing the superheater adequately in the furnace chamber coil corrosion can be reduce. The steam temperature can then be raised and thereby a higher power efficiency is obtained.
The PhD studies will investigate the influence of boiler operation conditions on a test superheater that will be installed on the AffaldPlus waste plant in Næstved. The project will include boiler chamber measurements, development of new advanced measuring equipment, and CFD calculations.
Responsibilities and tasks
The PhD project consists of research on the flow and ash behavior in a waste boiler and the influence of the boiler environment on a test superheater. Furthermore equipment used for boiler chamber measurements shall be further developed within the project.
The objectives of the PhD project are:
- To summarize previous studies relevant for the new superheater concept with respect to ash formation and corrosion, and the status of applicable furnace chamber measuring Technologies.
- To obtain an adequate prediction of the flows in the furnace chamber by CFD calculations and flow Measurements.
- To obtain an understanding of fly ash formation and transformation in the vicinity of the full scale test superheater.
- To measure the deposit formation distribution on the test super heater and measure the deposits compositions.
- To develop the needed measuring equipment to be used for the ash and flow related boiler measurements.
- To provide recommendations for optimal control strategies for the Steamboost technology.
Candidates should have a master's degree in chemical engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in Engineering.Approval and Enrolment
