CoaST is a newly established research center at the Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering, DTU. CoaST cover coating technologies from raw materials, over formulation, test and characterization to production and application. In the broad perspective, the center will support development, production and use of high performance coatings with improved sustainability profiles over the lifetime of the coating.
Areas of research include e.g. anticorrosive coatings for steel structures, blade coatings for wind turbines, intumescent coatings for passive fire protection, antifouling coatings for ships, insulation coatings for heat loss reduction, coatings for the cement- and mineral industries, for oil- and gas pipelines at high temperature and high pressure, for concrete structures under challenging conditions etc.
Highly motivated candidates are invited to apply for PhD positions in relation to heavy-duty coatings, i.e. the fields indicated above. We search for candidates for projects related to e.g.:
- Practical and computer-based formulation
- New e.g. high-throughput screening test methods
- Mathematical tools for simulating coatings behavior
- New functional pigments
- Bio-based polymers for sustainable coatings
- The integration of digital technology and communication technology in coatings formulation, test and production
- New production methods – continuous production
But we also search for candidates with own ideas for “better coatings for the future”. – If you have such ideas, please write a project proposal.
Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in Engineering.
Approval and Enrolment
The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU. For information about the general requirements for enrolment and the general planning of the scholarship studies, please see the DTU PhD Guide.

Salary and appointment terms
The salary and appointment terms are consistent with the current rules for PhD degree students. The period of employment is 3 years.
