DTU Chemical Engineering seeks a qualified candidate for a vacant PhD position within catalytic conversion of CO2 containing syngas mixtures to olefins and aromatics.

The research project will combine catalyst synthesis, evaluation of catalytic activity and catalyst characterization to develop and understand catalyst structure-activity relationships to enable direct conversion of CO
2 to plastic monomers. The project will be carried out in collaboration with Haldor Topsøe A/S.

Responsibilities and tasks
The tasks of the PhD project will be a research project with minimum the following components: 

  • Synthesis of new catalysts using standard wet chemistry and hydrothermal techniques
  • Evaluation of catalytic activity and selectivity using laboratory flow reactors
  • Catalyst characterization by physiochemical methods (e.g. gas physisorption, chemisorption, TPR and TPD) and spectroscopic techniques (e.g. Raman, IR and X-ray absorption spectroscopy)
Additionally the candidate will engage in teaching and dissemination activities, such as being assistant teacher in a BSc/BEng/MSc course, co-supervising BSc/BEng/MSc project students, presenting at international conferences relevant to the field and writing peer-reviewed papers and possibly a popular science paper. 

Qualifications
Candidates for the PhD positions should have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree. Preference will be given to candidates with a degree in chemical engineering, chemistry, materials science, nanoscience or similar with experience within the abovementioned research tasks.

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see the

Assessment
The assessment of the applicants will be made by Assistant Professor Martin Høj and Associate Professor Jakob Munkholt Christensen.

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.

The work will be carried out primarily at DTU Lyngby Campus, but tasks at Haldor Topsøe A/S in Lyngby (nearby the DTU Lyngby Campus) and an external research stay at an International partner for 3 to 6 months is expected.
