Slow Steaming Anti-Fouling Paint

’Slow Steaming Anti Fouling Paint’ is a project under the Blue INNOship partnership which focuses on creating solutions that will lead to growth and jobs in the Danish maritime industry.

Objective

The objective of the project is to develop coatings with a particularly low friction resistance. A new such technology will provide extra fuel savings in the first period of application of the coating when there still is very little fouling on the hull of on the ship. The new coatings are to be formulated with a view to optimal levelling during application and hardening when the ship is on dry dock in order to make them as smooth as possible. The challenge is that changing the levelling ability may affect other important floating characteristics such as the tendency for paint to run on vertical surfaces.

The rheological studies which the project entails take place at DTU Chemical Engineering, while Hempel contributes with formulation technical expertise. Maersk Maritime Technology will especially be responsible for performance specifications and analyses of the potential of the new technologies.

The project is supported by Innovation Fund Denmark and The Danish Maritime Fund.
